Modjo Dry Port Expansion Faces Hiccup in $25M World Bank Loan

The expansion project of a dry port facility in Modjo faces yet another setback following a deferred approval of a 25 million dollars loan request by the World Bank.

The Bank is financing the undertaking through 150-million-dollar loans approved in 2017. However, the project was not commissioned to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) for over 4.7 billion Br until last July. The contractor is to receive the full payment in local currency.

Located 77Km east of Addis Abeba, Modjo Dry Port was established in 2009 to accommodate around 18,000 containers. Located along the Ethio-Djibouti trade corridor, the dry port rests on 62ht of land and handles 80pc of the country’s international trade. It has an annual capacity of handling over 170,000 containers.

The expansion project, which will take up 173ht of land, is expected to cut the average waiting time from two months to three weeks. The upgrading of the dry port to what will be called the “Modjo Green Logistics Hub” has had its deadline postponed from the initial July 2022. Due to slow progress, the project office has revised the completion date to November 2024.

The World Bank today approved US$70 million in credit from the International Development Association (IDA), the World Bank’s program for the poorest countries, to improve regional connectivity and logistics in Djibouti, along the Djibouti-Addis Ababa corridor.

An upgraded, more efficient and safer road corridor will attract investments, facilitate regional and domestic trade, and create new jobs and economic opportunities, especially for women. The project contributes to Djibouti’s overall objective of poverty reduction.

The Djibouti Regional Economic Corridor Project will support the rehabilitation and upgrading of 42 kilometers of the Djibouti-Addis Ababa southern corridor, which connects landlocked Ethiopia to world markets via access to Djibouti’s port. The project will build infrastructure that is both climate-resilient and adheres to road safety standards.

Meridiam and its Partner Arise Inaugurates Mauritania New Container Terminal in Nouakchott

Meridiam and its partner Arise PCC (Olam and Africa Finance Corporation joint venture), inaugurated the new container terminal of Nouakchott, Mauritania. The project, co-owned and codeveloped by Meridiam and Arise PCC, was awarded in September 2018 under a 30-year concession scheme.

This ambitious infrastructure project represents a total investment of €278 million and is the first developed under a PPP-scheme in the country. Its scope covers the development, financing, construction, maintenance and operation of a new and dedicated container terminal at the port of Nouakchott, designed to have an initial handling capacity of 250,000 TEUs, and the extension and deepening of the port area from previously 12m to 14,70m to allow the access of larger container vessels. The project also foresees a significant potential for extending the capacity of the terminal in the future, which could be able to handle a potential maximum capacity of 600,000 TEUs i.e., almost 4 times the actual container capacity.

Another Lockdown at Ningbo Has Exporters on Edge

Another Lockdown at Ningbo Has Exporters on Edge

More than 300,000 people have been tested for coronavirus in a district in the port city of Ningbo, following an outbreak of the illness, detected on Monday.

The district of Zhenhai has been put on a two-week lockdown after five people tested positive for Covid-19. Early indications are that the measures taken by local authorities have yet to harm productivity at the port. Ningbo is home to the world’s largest port – it was partially closed in the summer for a fortnight after another Covid-19 outbreak.

Beijing’s strict zero-Covid policy has curbed local outbreaks with mass testing, snap lockdowns, vigilant surveillance and extensive quarantines. The country has struggled over the past couple of months to stamp out the illness however. Since October 17, China has reported at least one locally transmitted case every day, as local outbreaks continue to flare up one after another with increasingly short intermissions.
